Ruey Ling Chang, eighty-three, was on her way to pick up a prescription when we met her. We loved the layers of her all-gray outfit: a silk paisley shirt from Taiwan, thick ribbed pants, and a barrette that pulled back her silver bob. On Mrs. Chang, this dark monochrome was vibrant.

She also had the blogger pose down.

THE YEES

We ran across the street to get a closer look at Mr. Yee, seventy-three, and Mrs. Yee, seventy-two, whose colors caught our eyes: she in her bright orange cap and madras blazer (that her daughter gave her when she moved away for college), he in his bright red plaid fleece and blue windbreaker pants. Their synchronicity was heartwarming. It felt unintentionally intentional: the plaid, layering, and bold colors.

“Do you guys match on purpose?” we asked.

“We don’t talk about what we wear,” they said. “We just put it on.”

They met forty-something years ago through a matchmaker. When we pressed for more details about how they met, they declined to share. Some things don’t need to be explained, we suppose. Their outfits gave us a hint of how their souls match, of how their fashion sense and hearts work in sync.
